How to remove a Toyota Corolla driver's or passenger's front seats is easy. This will cure your car's boredom for good. Toyota front seat removal is governed by 4 bolts; two 14mm metric bolts in the front and two 14mm bolts in the rear that come out easily with a ratchet wrench set with small extension.
Each of my cars speak to me. They have their own personality that connects with an aspect of mine. For this 96 Toyota Corolla, it's turned itself into a fun outdoors project car used for camping, sleeping in, and hauling equipment (I provide meditation retreats and work at a meditation personal retreat center).
So far it's asked for me to install a lexan sunroof, strengthen the rear shocks for hauling equipment inside the cab, taking out the rear toyota bench so it can now sleep a 5'8" person comfortably flat on their back, rubber-izing and reupholstering the seats and door panels, and now, to remove the Toyota's front passenger seat to install a custom carrier bench for hauling boxes. I reinstalled the front toyota seatbelt on the bench, so it can double as an actual seat for someone to sit on.

| Toyota Passenger or Driver seat. If you want to remove the seat from the metal slider base, there are four 12mm bolts connecting the slider to the chair itself. |
Procedure for removing the Toyota front seat to get to the seat covers can be found on this link.
You do not save gas mileage by removing a front Toyota seat or a rear bench. Toyota has mastered making seats and roof panels, etc from the lightest materials. This seat is estimated at 18 lbs or less. Most of it is lightweight foam. The rear bench is one long piece of single foam, also lightweight, around the weight of a milk jug.
How to remove the front seats of a Honda Civic can be found in this forum. It's the same procedure.

I drive this car 90% of the time alone without passengers. Half of that time is spent hauling equipment. So it only made sense to do this, and it feels Great to not have this big seat in the way! It doubles as a truck with twice the gas mileage (34mpg).

Good to see that Toyota have improved the characteristics of Toyota Corolla. At last, I have seen this car more stylish and affordable as well.
ReplyDeleteAre the front driver's and passenger's seats in the Corolla identical? I was thinking of swapping them, since the passenger seat has received virtually no use, and the driver's seat is worn.
ReplyDeleteSame question as anonymous above - I also want to do this. Might just have a crack next day off and see if I can do it. Will let you know here.
ReplyDeleteAwesome John ... Very helpful ... I am doing a retreat to the mountains and the extra room will be helpful!
ReplyDeleteGlad I found your site - thanks for the instructions! All the best - steve
ReplyDeleteThanks for this Except a passenger CAN NOT sit there.
ReplyDeleteThere must be a backrest or the seat belt is useless, not to mention virtually impossible to stay seated when you accelerate! ;)
I really doubt you actually read this entire article. If you had read the whole thing you would've seen that the 5th picture from the bottom he says, and I quote," next month I'll add a back rest on hinges for a passenger
Deleteto functionally use this seat." So next time read the whole article before you type.

I have a low mileage '98 Corolla with lots of life left, but it no longer fit my needs. Reluctant to go back to car-paymentland I decided to look into converting it into something I can sleep in as well as haul a wider variety of things.
ReplyDeleteI'm only 5'-5" so removing the back seat allowing the back back seat to fold down flat was a huge leap in the right direction. Thanks for the idea of removing the front passenger seat and adding the bench. Great idea.
Wanted to say thanks for this. Had to replace the O2 sensor on my corolla and this is what I needed to do to get at the plug in.
ReplyDeleteGreat work John. Thanks for posting.
ReplyDeleteI liked you sentence, "They have their own personality that connects with an aspect of mine". :) I kinda feel the same about my cars :D...

A hole...what do you think your ex girl friend is going to say.
ReplyDeleteI have a 1999 Toyota Carolla. Its basically the same layout as the car that you showed. Do you think its possible to take out the bucket seats and replace it with a single bench seat. How could this be done?
ReplyDeletehmmm, i know anything's possible so i'll say Yes you can.
Deletecheck measurements, and you'll need to add some methods of connecting Toyot'as given connectors on the floor to what you have on the bench, like i did. rig it.
the emergency brake is the only issue. will parts of the center console need to be cut out or moved to a new location.
custom shops are great places to ask these things to (and machine shops).
